As the association for eye care providers, FODO helps individual, local, regional and national eye care providers succeed by offering insurance and sector-leading regulatory defence, advice and guidance on a wide range of topics.

2023 membership rates

If you are a body corporate registered with the General Optical Council (GOC) you can benefit from:

  • Insurance, which includes medical malpractice insurance covering your organisation, your clinical team and all staff under their supervision for up to £10 million per occurrence.  Learn more
  • Prices are based on full time equivalent (FTE) of your GOC registered staff, not headcount. With more GOC registrants working part time, you can benefit from our pricing structure which only charges you per FTE, potentially saving you £1,000s a year. The fee per FTE is made up as follows:

    • Membership £158
    • Insurance £352
    • Total cost £510
  • Option to add HCPC registered audiologists (hearing aid dispensers) to your medical malpractice and legal defence insurance for just £170 per FTE
  • Legal and expert regulatory support with complaints, including GOC related issues. Read more
  • Practice owner's hub - all you need to succeed, including employment and health and safety advice, access to a commercial legal helpline and guidance on tax matters and more
  • Guidance and support on regulation and compliance and more
  • Training for you as a practice owner that helps you succeed and mitigate risk

We also offer membership to non-registered GOC provider organisations. Please email [email protected] for a quote. 

If you are an optometrist, contact lens optician or dispensing optician and your employer does not already pay for your medical malpractice insurance*, or if you are a locum, then you can apply to join FODO's full individual membership and benefit from:

  • Insurance, which includes medical malpractice insurance covering you up to £10 million per occurrence. 
  • Legal and expert regulatory support with complaints, including GOC related issues.
  • HR support. Working with our partner Prospect, so that you get the support you need
  • Guidance and support on a wide range of issues

Price breakdown

Part time 

To qualify for the part-time subscription rate, you must work fewer than 130 days a year (about 2.5 days per week per on average). If you intend to work fewer than 130 days in 2023 you can select this option and let us know later if you exceed 130 days during 2023.

* We also provide insurance for many practices across the UK. Check with your employer before you purchase medical malpractice insurance because you might not need to pay for your own insurance. If your employer pays for medical malpractice insurance already and you want to join us without paying for insurance then please get in touch by emailing [email protected].
